What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
BJJ is a martial art, a sport, and a way of life. Please read History of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Do I need prior experience?
No. We have students of all levels. Those with little or no experience begin training in our BJJ 101: White Belt Foundation class.
I’m really out of shape. Should I get in shape before starting?
No, we encourage you to start now! The unique physical demands of BJJ make even those “in shape” feel “out of shape” in the beginning! You will quickly acclimate to the training, and your fitness will improve just by participating in class.
What can I expect in my first class?
You will get an introduction to the art and be shown the fundamental principles, positions, and movements. Class structure is formed around a warm-up, a technique lesson, and partner training to practice the technique in a “live” context.
What equipment do I need?
- Young Champs BJJ: Gi uniform. Mouthpiece and groin protection recommended.
- Adult BJJ: Gi uniform. Mouthpiece and groin protection recommended.
- No-gi BJJ: Rash guard and shorts. Mouthpiece and groin protection recommended.
- Muay Thai: 16-oz gloves, shin guards, mouthpiece, groin protection.

What are the Academy rules?
Please read Boston BJJ Participation Guidelines.
What are the ages of the Young Champs BJJ classes?
Ages 5-12.
What are the ages of the Adult BJJ classes?
Ages 16+.
How often should I train?
We have classes Monday through Saturday. BJJ training is physically demanding, so you might start training twice a week and gradually increase from there. Once acclimated, the more you train, the more you will improve. We recommend training at least twice a week to build proficiency, but listen to your body to avoid overtraining. Don’t train injured, don’t train if you’re exhausted.
How long before I can start coming to the Advanced class?
The Advanced class is for students with a blue belt and above. It depends on your individual progress, but most students are promoted from white to blue belt in an average of 6-12 months. White belts are welcome and encouraged to attend All Levels classes and open mat sessions to experience training with higher belts.
Do you have women-only classes?
Aside from special events, we do not currently have women-only classes. Our female students train with male students in a safe, supervised environment.
